Helping Haiti Recover and Rebuild:
Two-Year Anniversary of the 2010 Earthquake
The effects of the 7.0 earthquake that tore through Haiti in January 2010 no longer dominate the news. But its disastrous effects still impact the island nation. Two years after the earthquake, HHF is still dedicated to the recovery and rebuilding efforts in Haiti – bringing a future full of hope to the children.
Affects of the 2010 Earthquake on the Haitian Ministry of Education
- Directly affected two million people.
- More than 3,000 schools in the earthquake zone had been destroyed or damaged.
- Children make up about 45% of the Haitian population.
- Thousands of children are left to toiling in the streets with no school to attend.

APRIL 2011
HHF began a partnership with ProDev to open the Ecole Nouvelle Zoranje Kindergarten. The 102 students, ages 3-5, include children originally living in the Village La Renaissance Orangers area, children displaced and relocated from earthquake areas, and children attending from nearby Cite Soleil. The school, designed around a courtyard, includes 3 classrooms, administrative offices, and an all purpose room. Just outside, a new playground provides an age-appropriate place for the children to play.
SEPTEMBER 2011
HHF and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), harmonizing efforts, in support of the Government of Haiti to build back schools that were affected by the January 12, 2010 earthquake, making a long-term and sustainable commitment for the future of the people of Haiti.
